Notes About The Poem

5.7 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer's disease, this poem speaks to the plight these people face each day.

Like Dust In the Wind

Like Dust in the Wind

Like dust in the wind all my dreams have been scattered;
my hopes are now dimming as memories shattered
and worn like old clothes that are torn and all tattered,
but life still goes on just like none of this mattered.

The moments remembered are getting more blurry,
the days of my youth with its hustle and hurry,
these memories fading I’m starting to worry,
but still life goes on with its flow and its flurry.

These people around me with loving embraces
I don’t know their names but remember their faces;
my thoughts are all trampled without any traces,
but life still goes on with its rants and its races.

I’m living in solitude, lonely and shaken,
a prisoner of aging whose hopes are forsaken;
surrounded by darkness, I can’t seem to waken;
like dust in the wind all my past has been taken.

John: Your past may have been taken but don't let it consume your present. Of course your future is anyone's guess. :o) Thanks for sharing with all of us on the soup. oldbuck

WoW! John, Good rhymes and content. My aunt suffered from dementia. Is Alzheimer’s and Dementia hereditary? You captured someone suffering from this dreadful disease very well. Excellent job. PS, I wrote a poem on the same topic entitled “ I’ll Remember For Us Both” Have a wonderful day my friend-Alexis

My Mother had dementia, a cousin of Alzheimers disease, so sad to watch and hear her, but then an incredible miracle happened! She sadly fell and hurt her ankle which eventually brought about her demise, but she remembered us all and and even read the newspaper! Our house doctor had no explanation for this! Well penned John, I have faved this. Blessings, Jennifer.

"like dust in the wind all my past has been taken" So sad. It breaks my heart knowing this happens. Loved ones watching their loved ones fade away, in this way. Your thoughts caress gently around me. I wish I could make this disease disappear. ~ Brandy

I think many of us on here will have seen the ugly face of that condition close up John, you described it perfectly in your well written verse . So pitiful to see them fade away. Tom
