Notes About The Poem

ammil: The glittering layer of ice that dusts leaves, twigs, and grass after a freeze.

CONTRAST: I've layered contrasts across imagery, tone, and rhythm. The hemispheric straddle is implied through seasonal cues, but the deeper contrasts—joy vs. discord, movement vs. stillness, warmth vs. frost—give the poem its tension and resonance.

Like Ammil

Movie clips of coloured cocktail sips— voices of children in pool recoil. The ancient family feuds in which to embroil. My reality becomes an unwelcome foil. A silk dress with a white lacy frill—- my reflection now still like ammil.

Reading what you replied to Paige. Yes. It was a bit obscure for me. I even looked up Ammil and I kind of got it, especially the first part. It is very original and intelligent. Probably if I were not the type who loved lucid poetry, I would have scored it higher. I loved the part about the silk dress with frill. Sounds so nostalgic. Congrats . You did very well in my contest

PS I was referring to the poetic form being *obscure*.

I do like this somewhat obscure form and have not written any examples for my books since 2019. Thanks for reading and your kind comment, Paige. At this time of year, I straddle the two hemispheres - staying or visiting one, while the rest of my family is in the other.
