Like a Phoenix
Like A Phoenix
By Rick Rucker
My last vision of my Wife is Dead,
Lying in her hospice bed
For the longest time, I could not sleep,
Thoughts of Love and loss would creep
All the long night, into my head,
I couldn’t sleep upon a bed
Sleeping standing is not just a quirk,
It doesn’t seem to be able to work.
At first, I tried a well-worn couch,
The result: all I could say was “Ouch,”
A mattress on the floor was next,
I no longer seem to be hexed!
At long last, sleep does overcome,
My mind, with thoughts so dumb.
There are other uses for a bed,
Twixt being born, and being dead.
Lovers have found them to be handy,
When they’re feeling very randy.
I remember how it felt
How my willing heart would melt,
How it was to hold my love,
The sound of Angels from above
Would drown out all the strife
When I’d lie beside my wife.
Sometimes, she would be playful, teasing
Other times, to keep from freezing
We would lie so close together
No one could guess whether
We were two, or only one
Those days certainly were fun.
Those memories do fade
At times, they seem a cruel charade.
Now, that part of my life has passed,
These memories won’t long last.
A miracle I’m asking for,
To feel like that, in bed, once more!
To sleep all through the night,
And awaken to the sight,
Of my love, her face bathed in light,
And holding her with all my might.
Am I asking far too much?
To, her willing body, touch?
And before my hope crashes,
To rise, like a phoenix, from the ashes?
