Lightning Bugs
I called them fairies’ lanterns
back when I was but a kid
Trapped them into mason jars
sealed them up with metal lids
We’d rip off their lighted butt
and place it on our left hand
Pretend we were all grown up
and it was our wedding band
When I see those fireflies now
out beyond my back porch screen
I think about yesterdays
and wonder why I was so mean
