Notes About The Poem

12/15/2025 for Syncopated Cinqopet Poetry Contest sponsored by Gregory Richard Barden

Life's Rhythmic Song

A life of rhythm makes a song
a signature of time, that's strong,
will make us brightly sing along -
the sentimental reason -
a quarter note, each season.

A year goes by, we count a beat.
For youth it is a special treat,
but years and breath's supply, deplete -
our sweet, melodic treasure -
four beats per single measure.

A promise, kisses and bouquets
as lovers ever fate obeys
and measures make a music phrase.
Now dig that syncopation -
a whole new generation.

The first verse, we are just a child.
Our crazy, funky beat goes wild.
We looked like Grandma when we smiled,
and though I may be dissing,
like Gramps, whose beat was missing.

But, soon, we're old women and men
and fondly we remember when,
and wish to do it all again.
Though we've been through the ringer,
we praise the song and singer.

And now that it's almost complete.
I still want to tap my feet.

David, congratulations on this life-follows-a-rhythm poem! (I used a similar theme in my piece, "A Rhythm of Life"). Well done on your placement in this contest! Blessings & very best, Bartholomew

Thanks, I like this rhyme scheme, which was determined by the contest rules. I just hope I followed the meter closely - I'm a bit challenged with that.

Hello David, I really enjoyed the way you carried rhythm through the whole piece, it feels like you turned the passage of time into music itself. The syncopation stanza especially stood out, giving the poem a playful lift while still holding onto its deeper message. Life’s beats, whether youthful or worn, are worth celebrating, and you’ve captured that with both energy and tenderness. Holiday, Blessings, David, Daniel

Hi Daniel, I appreciate your kind review! As I mentioned to Sara, above, I like the rhyme scheme specified in the contest rules - they seem to create a nice rhythm.
