Letter To My Daughter

LETTER TO MY DAUGHTER

In case I never get a chance to say this,
I want to catch it in this poem and not miss
The chance to say what you mean to me.
Don’t tell those two boys, but we
Both know I always wanted a daughter
In preference to a son, though I oughter
Say, of course, you’re all my favourites.
Of course, every dad always overrates,
But you are special in my eyes.
Something about the way you’re wise
To always be feminine but keep
A few boyish traits as well, like a leap
Now and then into a radical sense of humour.
And you’re not a doom-and-gloomer
But a positive bouncy spirit,
And a laid-back attitude to life with it,
And, Helen, to be truthful
This is always going to be useful .
Throughout your busy life,
Whether welder, weather-girl, or wife,
Remember to keep this combination:
You’ll always be loved in admiration.

Dads develop special bonds with daughters, Syd. I know mine loved my brother a lot, but my sister and I had a closer relationship with him. Your Helen sounds like a wonderful daughter. How blessed you are to have her in your life. I hope you will show her this poem, for her spirits will soar even higher when she reads it. Love, Carolyn
