You've summed this up quite well and in so few words; reads beautifully.

One to ponder, dear friend! My son, who was a submariner chef, once called us to say he was thinking of volunteering to go to Iraq. My husband and I could not even look each other in the eye for that was a heart stopper. We made him ponder his choices but never told him what to do. How could we? Others go but not yours?

What we did do was speak to him about the reality of the situation. He felt like he would be safe and we said even if you were you would most likely encounter others who weren’t. Just tried to make him think.

Precisely put, Kim: "Others go, but not yours..." And yet...It's one thing to defend freedom; it's entirely another thing to get involved in an ongoing quagmire in an Islamic republic which, by definition and nature, has no clue as to what freedom or democracy entails. So, if it had been me, I guess I would have done my best to dissuade him from going to Iraq. Difficult, difficult, difficult it is raising sons!! My heart goes out to you! :) gw, whose youngest son will be in the Israeli Army within a year...

No one should have to fight for it, what gives someone the right to deny you your freedom. Tom.

Here's a smart-aleck answer to your straightforward question, Tom: What gives someone the right to deny us our freedom (in a democracy, at least), is that we citizens voted the bugger into office! There you have it. Thanks for the thought-provoking comment. Best always, Gershon
