Lay of Smoke

As if we were rabbits
All that's needed for our happiness
Is the end of the world

I woke this morning to a sound of strange digging
A little grave for a little dog
Maxie
She belonged to my neighbor

A man with only one arm and a garden
Too big for this world

As if we were rabbits
All that's needed for any heaven
Covered with pine needles at the bottom
Into which goes the world
