Lament
They stood staring at each other,
Knowing only one could survive,
Which one it would be,
Neither of them knew,
They looked each other over,
Until they turned away,
There was nothing more to see,
Nothing else to say,
So they pursued their separate tragedies,
They cut themselves in half,
Their minds directed toward the future,
Their hearts left in the past,
Now one has gone on to fame and fortune,
The other a layman’s dream,
One lives a mystical life,
The other a cunning routine,
Neither believes in the healing of time,
Nor second chances down the line,
Gone are impassioned lovers’ cries,
Or forever after of any kind,
And so I watch them from afar,
For I know who and what they are,
I knew them once upon a time,
When I was his and he was mine.
