We should allow old trees including those sick from dieback and other diseases to remain standing. We need to create today the knurled and wizened ecosystems that only our grandchildren will see. We need a new and deeper respect for the legacy of old nature and the need for 'slow ecology'. Healthy ecosystems depend on old and gnarly places. Spatial heterogeneity may take centuries to develop. Bats shelter in splits in old trunk. Birds nest in holes. Bees and wildlife make homes in crevices. Fungi, lichens and mosses, need rough, old, wrinkled and gnarled entangled spaces.
