Killing Time

It seems time has not been on our side
Circumstances have kept us apart
Our stars thus far, have not aligned
Though mutual feelings still exist in our hearts

Your life is there and mine is here
Still, our connection continues to hold space
A buffer of miles exist between
Perhaps protecting that cherished, sacred place

At present, you have eyes for another
You are single, free to do as you please
But I wonder, if it's just 'in the meantime'
Since I'm tied down and she's fully free

Whatever the reason, it's bewildering
Keeping your honest desires aloof
Trying to discern the love that you really want
Even if that means evading the truth

What's meant to be cannot be prevented
Nor feelings denied of what's hidden down deep
Obscured emotions only make the stakes higher
Which heart to let go, and which one to keep

The phrase 'One day at a time' is your motto
But, I question if we're just killing time
With the hopes we'll end up together
And our lucky love stars will forever shine
