Kennedy
I remember duck and cover
Knees tightly up to chest
Face down, hands placed behind the head
Each child below his desk
I remember single file
From classroom to the hall
The other duck and cover
Lined up against the wall
It was just another drill
Much like the one for fire
Sirens for the unknown threat
For fires the special ringing bell
Then back to work; all is well; and yet,
I wondered why we had this help
For threats that didn’t manifest
But nothing for our President
That left me dark and empty
A gaping hole within my chest
