Keeping the Memories Alive

Come fluttering words, come drifting words to me.
Thy sweet words from yore I treasure as I think of thee.
Slowly I descend the garden stairs that we once tread in happier hours,
Where we strolled hand-in-hand and sat 'neath its latticed bowers.

I inhale the perfume of flowers agleam with beads of morning dew,
As I dream and reminisce, my thoughts e'er drifting back to you.
Tears flow in rivulets upon my cheeks as I recall our last embrace.
Here, we pledged our eternal love that no other could e'er replace.

You were so dashing in thy uniform as you answered thy nation's call.
A young lieutenant, you dedicated your life to serve, what e'er may befall.
Pressing on midst the thunder of cannon and the muskets' piercing rattle,
Alas, you fell leading thy men through the billowing flames of battle!

Now, my love, all I have are precious memories to which I fondly cleave.
When I think of the promises that the future held, I am bourne to grieve.
I pluck roses from the garden we knew so well to place upon thy grave,
To keep alive in my broken heart the priceless love you so freely gave.
