Notes About The Poem

Written as an example for the 'Infill with Attitude' Contest
Listen to poem:
Kat-titude
Kat entered
to claim every
patch of sunlight.
Bushy tail held high,
bright-eyed, beyond permission.
Lows hum accompanied every glance when
praise appeared. When names were called;
directions wandered elsewhere. Kat curled
beside forgiveness, yet never far from
sorrow. Aloofness decided whose leg became
a lap. Affection appeared wearing soft
velvet slippers, Then flicked a tail
and slipped out the door. A dry
nose twitched beneath long gray
whiskers. Conversation
dissolved beneath selective
hearing. Silver claws sharpened
on polished chair legs; Patience frayed like
scratched curtains. Sofas remembered every
passing conversation. Claw hooks unraveled carefully
kept memories. Muddy paws crossed well-mapped good
intentions. Tail hooked high like a shepherd's crook
claiming passage. Night doors locked curiosity safely
indoors. Breakfast inspected every opened fish tin.
Only the choicest morsels deserved a second glance.
Morning brought home yesterday's wild trophies.
Disastrous tumbles became elegant landings by
teatime. Bruises and scratches were polished
into grace. Some called it confidence;
others arrogance. Either way, the room
paused, then applauded. Old grudges
prowled moonlit hallways forever.
Peace rarely escaped without
screams and claw marks. Proud
gifts came as half-chewed
apologies. Expecting praise
for such generous offerings.
Kat was very comfortable
keeping at its distance,
Knowing who held the
room, who kept at bay.
Loved beyond reason,
indifference beyond
wisdom.
Every
family
secretly
has their
home
Kat.
