Katie Mae

First loves are hardest to get over They stay with you till your last day She helped me learn what love was And her name was Katie Mae And when I was just a boy She helped me become a man My destiny seemed to rest there Right in the palm of her hand But little did I know she Would spread her wings and fly Leaving this lost and lonely boy Filled with emptiness inside She was honeysuckle in May The best one in the bouquet Her sundresses always tempted And her name was Katie Mae Now when I look back on my memories My cloudy mind becomes so clear I can picture her in the hallway It's stuck with me all these years I remember asking: Katie May I talk to you real fast Katie May I take you to the prom She smiled and softly said yes My inhibitions soon were gone From that day on my whole life changed It would never be the same I spent that summer, living my dreams In the arms of Katie Mae But young love has a way To somehow grow apart Leaving holes that still reside In that once young man's heart I hear Katie's married now And she's finally settled down But one day I got a call Saying she'd be back in town I remember how I felt Mixed emotions ruled that day Yet somehow I traveled back To another time, another place So I asked her: Katie may I take you out to dinner Katie may we talk about old times Katie mae said she would have changed things Said she was young and she was blind I just smiled as I sat there Thinking about what she had said Hanging on to every line Wishing, as we reminisced I daydreamed: Katie may I take you to the movies Even heard Katie Mae say I do These were all the things I once hoped for If Katie Mae only knew
