Just Once

It all started with a dare...
"Come on, just this one time,
don't be a sissy"

You had to do it,
just to be part of the
"in crowd"

All it took was one time
and I was hooked, trapped,
and I lost control...
It took over my life,
my life was on a downward spiral...

Everything was a mess,
I lost everything I loved,
everything that made sense
was taken away,
with one hit...

All that’s left is me,
wandering the streets,
planning my next hit,
craving my next puff...

I'll even steal to make it happen...
And all it took was one dare…

*ps: not a personal experience but I've seen it happen to people close to me*

It's sad how it can all happen by just that one first hit. Addictions are like that, be they gambling, drinking whatever. It's the same way with me and the internet. It just took one click!! And it created a monster. This was a good little poem, wilma. I'm happy to meet you here. maybe this one is free verse! Let me see another of your "I don't know which form" poems! LUv, Andrea

:) thanks for that footnote, Wilma ;) It really is amazing how doing something just one time can alter your life...I have to admit though--seeing that title of yours made me think of James Ingram---aack now I have his song in my head!! lol!! haha I have nightmares with this song, it's our theme song during exams (which I failed, lol) relating to those horrific math exams--I never was good in math for one!--nikko :)

Like so many things, our experiences in life give us an insight into a world which is sometimes dark. Even though we may not have felt the experience ourself, the ones we love and care about can often give us the emotion as if we have lived it. Great write! Dan C
