Just a Friend

I watch him as he holds her and caresses her soft skin. I was once the lucky one, but now I'm just a friend. He doesn't mean to hurt me, he tells me all the time. He doesn't know it kills me that he's no longer mine. I know I should be thankful it ended without pain. But why does it break my heart every time I hear her name? Then it finally happened. She broke his heart in two. He cried on my shoulder, and I knew what I had to do. It was hard but I convinced her to give him another try. Their puppy love fades all too soon, but my true love never dies.
