Johnny

Johnny was a village lad,
Hard working, and willing.
So when his King and Country called
Johnny took the shilling.

At the station, family gathered
To wave their lad goodbye.
Johnny kissed his mother,
Who now began to cry.

"Come back to me my son, she cried
Come back to me again."
So once more Johnny kissed her,
Then climbed aboard the train.

Ready for the fight,
In the trenches Johnny stood.
Waiting for the whistle,
While ankle deep in mud.

Whistles blew, as one they went
The withering fire they braved,
Their village lad, he died that day
A foreign field his grave.

He would never feel his mothers kiss,
He would march in no parades.
But everyone remembers him,
And the sacrifice he made.
