It's Hell Getting Old
I glanced in her room as I walked by,
her graying hair, crinkled and dry,
frail and bruised and frightfully thin,
as if she was sheathed in onion skin.
She was trying to reach her "house coat" she said,
at some point it must have slipped from the bed,
I picked it up, helped her put it on,
she looked so worried, I asked what was wrong.
"I just want to know when you'll put me to bed."
"That's where you are!" I said, shaking my head.
I fluffed up her pillows and straightened her sheets,
got her a blanket to cover her feet.
Then our eyes locked and we touched soul to soul,
and she said to me, "It's hell getting old."
