It Is All About You
I see your light blue eyes and watch your mouth
I want to believe, I do, I do.
So I smile, it is a tiny bit fixed….
You have no idea, do not notice.
For it is all about you. It always has been.
The lies come easily, you do not blink or flinch.
You are sorry, you will never again.
You are contrite, sobbing, begging for forgiveness
My bruised, battered face is conflicted.
Do I hold you? Will it make it better?
What happens if I act like I do not believe?
Will another beating come?
Relieved I am still here, I wrap my arms around you.
Wanting to believe you. This time will be different.
This time you mean it.
My eye is swollen shut.
I am hoping you will sooth my hair,
Touch my face, give me a bit of soothing too.
But you can’t.
For it is all about you.
It always is.
