It Covers Me

I wear your love like a garment, like a sheet it covers me. It drapes over my shoulders and wraps around my waist. It blankets my heart. As natives wear headdresses and tribesmen wear beads, identifying their clan, I wear your love and it claims me. It names me as yours, silently and surely. It cloaks me from the cold indifference of outsiders from other worlds, those that do not know my heart like you. It adorns me with the beauty of your affection. It keeps my secrets and cradles my form. It slides across me, nestling in the crook of my arm, gathering at the bend of my knee, pooling around my feet. Yes, it covers me. And this love, this garment, redefines me. I am no longer a separate entity. I am a part of something grand and beautiful and still. For, your love is a garment, but OUR love is a world in and of itself where I am your island and you are my oasis. It is separate from the rest of the world with its own history and its own design. Our love reconfigures borders. It changes the tide. It is a world where whispers are declarations and gestures are solemn vows. It is a world where all things are both new and familiar. So, I wear your love because I am yours, because I have always been yours. And it shields me from the sun. It guards me against the wind. It holds me in your absence. And yes, it covers me. Your love changes everything.
