Irish Childs Summer
Sheep now stand and graze
that the ice is long gone
it covered blue distant hills
South beyond Dublin town
It left carved rock and hill
under smooth mottled haze
when young I moved in light
on tilled ground through sunny days
Wading through cruel thistle
and crawling through scented hedge
of a far forgotten country
searching for its ragged edge
then wind sang in juvenile teeth
eyes trickled as silvered rills
before I could bend for home
far away from gorse brushed hills
