Iris
Today I felt
Do you believe
Today it was a day to grieve
For all the sky
Died with the sun
Just as the sky
Has always done
Today I felt
It was a moment
Lost within another's shade
Yet it was there
Though hardly rent
Before began to fade
And I could see
The intricate complexities
Of one who stood before me
Glancing back into the fraction of a moment
For when these eyes connected in my own
All I could see
Was but a mirror of myself
Reflecting back at me
A thousand times
Today I felt
Can you but see
The endless skies of souls I see in silver glint, glaring at me
Within my eye
The shell of my humanity, the soul that lies and would be free
From all that it has been and yet will be
How can I dare to need the self I see before me here
How can I hope to be the shadow of my own reflection
Who would not fear to tread the hollow ground?
A heart beats with the sound of empty drums; is it my own?
Today I felt
Or was it really me
Who knew the glory of existence
That dead dawn of waking from the wooden clamor of the past
Into the straw-stuffed shell of all that real men know as real
Was it really I who dreamed that it was I who felt the need
To know the light as it fell from the fading stars into my soul?
Before me lies all that I see
Within the eyes' reflection cast into oblivion
A thousand times today
I felt
