Invisible

You’ve been toeing the line
from the onset
twiddling your thumbs
while you waited your turn
keeping your wobbly chin up
even as gloom piles up and
begins to dampen even
the upper crust
But then fortune prances in
magic wand at hand
to bust wide open the doors
to paradise
and make dreams come to life

All players are poised to pounce
All eyes zeroed in on the prize
thought you too stood a chance
if only
for the breath in your chest
Your heart drums up a storm
while your sweat glands are
put to the test

Soon as your turn nears
your eyes swirl and turn into
brimming pools of tears
In an eye blink it all disappears
Went and breathed new life
into your fears
and blinked away your chance
so it appears
as the door slams in your face

You crane your neck this way
then that way in vain
mouth agape with dismay
as hope falters, then dies away
and plans crumble into disarray

As per usual, it’s just not your day
Suckled dry, now you are just
in the way
Bout to be wheeled out
to the shed at the back too

Get you banished
behind an invisibility cloak
you are officially off the clock

Left you docked on aeroplane mode
Now you are just a code
Valid only on print
till your identity is needed
to get the con back on the road
