Intro To September 11th

My son sat down his children To explain, a little bit, About the day the Towers, In 2001, were hit. Their school sends daily messages To watch upon a screen. Today’s contained a reference To what this date should mean. My grandkids (5 and 7) Never heard of this before. Their father, very gently, Opened up that looming door. With just the bare essentials, But the horror kept at bay, He let them know that every year We note this special day. In time, they’ll learn the details Which are seared into my brain But for now, I’m glad their innocence Will hopefully remain.

We had a school teacher watching it with her first grade class that day. I was asked to help the principal ask the teachers to not show it to the children and she refused. She had relatives in New York and kept screaming. The principal had to go down there and be very firm about it. It is such a delicate subject. Should be given to children by parents if you ask me.

I applaud your son for the delicacy he approaches the subject with his young one, while not ignoring its reality. My kids were 8 and 11 in 2001 and we had the challenge of explaining in age-appropriate terms the realities of hate and evil in the world. Being in New York, you had an even more visceral experience than most. God bless you, ilene, for honoring the day with this poetic commemoration. A fave ~ John

Well written, but isn't it wonderful you survived the daily murder and mayhem of NYC? Aloha! Rico

I hope so too Ilene, but in time they'll learn that there are some downright evil people amongst us, they hear things at school and they get curious. I remember that day so well, I was in Spain and thought there had been a terrible accident. Then I saw the newsfeed in English and tbe horror of what was going on unfolded. Greetings from Turkey. Tom
