Into the Unknown

Decades ago, he was a child at play
To him, it seems as if but yesterday
Of responsibilities he was so free
So each new day he loved to see
No one he knew had ever died
With any evil he'd not been tried
His world was a peaceful place
Very few discomforts did he face
Years of schooling lay before
He was expected to do little more
Jobs were easy to find and retain
Always employed he did remain
Marriage and family did appear
Then middle age drew so near
The road he walks which once was bright
Now slowly fades into shadows of night
The dense forest he sees that lies ahead
Holds terrors he must fear and dread
