Into the Deluge
My pants were soaked, my coat a’drip,
My boots were saturated;
With sheets of rain that sliced the sky,
I really should have waited.
The puddles on the corners
Most resembled roiling lakes.
Though I had an umbrella,
This was one of my mistakes.
I turned around before I even
Reached my destination,
The knowledge that at least I tried
A sorry consolation.
At home I toweled off and later,
When the rain was through,
I made it to the library –
Today my book was due!
