Notes About The Poem

In the Land of Date-Palms

Purim summons up images of clowns
                  merrymaking, painting the town
              Costumes galore, theatrical skits
singing, dancing to the music and more…

2,490 years ago Jews trembled in their boots
a sword suspended over their heads
Expecting by what is now Purim
to wake up stone cold dead

Saved at the last moment by Esther their queen
the whole thing seems a faraway dream
Yet of a sudden – Today – in the land of date-palms
Iran hits the Jews with missiles and bombs

We Israelis * may not have an Esther
But we believe in God with all of our heart
We stand together, brothers and sisters in arms
~ Bent but not broken, Iran can never tear us apart
