In My Room

The small window
to my room

shows blue skies
green leaves
singing birds

inside looking out.

But in here

the temperature’s dropping
the lights are dimming
the walls are steadily closing in

around me.

My happiness comes

from the few
paintings nailed
to the gray plaster

from the few
people I let in
through that door

that stays locked more often than not
these days.

I’m feeling claustrophobic
so I sit by this window

and

live vicariously
through those I see

passing outside.

hoping that one day
I can leave
and watch

from a more comfortable place.

The small window
to my room

lets in a little light
but not enough

to brighten
my day.
