Imaginary Lover
You don’t know me
You did not know me then
I watched you from afar
You knew not where or when
I turned up at your practice
I saw you through the gate
You stood behind the free-throw line
You did not hesitate
I even watched you on the diamond
As you swung your mighty bat
I perched high in the bleachers
In heat and rain I sat
When you scored the winning touchdown
I faithfully cheered and yelled
My would-be high school lover
For you my young heart swelled
And now we both are ancient
Alas, I missed my chance
If only I had spoken up
To claim a sweet romance
