If Poetry Were

If Poetry Were

If poetry were paintings, I’d paint the sweetest ones you never heard
Your soul could be the canvas where I’d paint every word.
Thought’s of inspiration that my heart gets just from you.
Are all the different colors on my painting when it’s through.

Each stroke of my brush where a brush mark forever lingers.
Would be imagined touches on your skin left by my fingers.
In each would be the background of a sky or birds or a tree.
My poetry would be paintings that some people only see.

But if poetry were love songs I put my heart in every word.
Making each of them more beautiful than the last one that you heard.
Your soul could be the paper where I write if you were mine.
Where it all comes together, every lyric in every line.

The music soft and tender speeding up each time we meet.
For every love song sung to you, my heart provides the beat.
Then you’d hear the words I’ve written, every if or but or ain’t
But could you see the picture in the words I’m trying to paint?

So instead I write the poetry of each and everything I ever saw.
And hope you hear the music in the words with which I draw.
Your soul is the safest place where I keep the words I write.
As each day I tell the story of my thoughts of you last night.
