If Only I'D Known

At the time I knew I had to keep you further back 
so people wouldn't look to you for knowledge or for fact 
I was unaware they call it "going no contact" 
and you being a narcissist explains the way you act 

I never stopped to think that I was making your life tougher
and that you only felt good when I was made to suffer 
choosing to manipulate in ways that I wouldn't bother 
and that you think success is found in the failure of another 

now I can see clearly if you're near me or my path 
that I'll suffer the consequences created by your wrath 
as you are just a narcissist and I am your empath 

the truth is if you're allowed to close you'll tear my world in half, 
but if I keep you a safe distance you're a joke at which I laugh
