If Only
You looked so deeply in my eyes
I could almost feel your smile.
As you lay there right next to me
and held me for awhile.
We talked about the yesterdays
and things we dreamed would be.
We talked about forever
we talked of you and me.
I saw the way your eyes lit up
I swear I smelled your skin.
God it felt so good to me
to be with you again.
We laughed and spoke of promises
that someday we would keep.
And as you lay there in my arms
we drifted off to sleep.
Awakened by the morning sun
I heard my own hearts screams.
But I held you again last night
if only in my dreams.
