If Only
I'm older now
but none the wiser,
a victim of my youth
scrounging in the darkness
searching for my truths.
Depression too often set in
the hero lost in the world's din,
despite the times, the raging revolution
history and lessons pass without solutions,
only every unkept resolution.
Looking back some sixty-plus years
retrieving laughter and every tear
time passages have lead us to here,
same old, same old questions without answers
political strategies, senatorial tap dancers.
If only time could teach lessons well learned
but humanity is resistant, reality spurned
we each see time passages in different lights
some voices raised freedom, justice and equality
others hide in their mediocrity.
If only time could flow in slow repeats
rewind and pause the lessons fleet
open wide the ears the eyes, the heart, the mind
generations recognizing we have one life to live for
eliminating hate and fear and war, our never more.
