IF I HAD KNOWN

If I had known the road was rough,
I would have stayed when life got tough.
If I had known the storm would rise,
I wouldn’t chase the fading skies.

If I had known the friends would go,
And leave me standing all alone,
I’d hold the few who truly cared,
Before they vanished in thin air.

If I had known my words could cut,
I’d speak with love and close my mouth.
I’d weigh my speech, I’d guard my tone,
And never let harsh seeds be sown.

If I had known that time could fly,
I’d hug my mother, wipe her eye.
I’d hold her hands a little more,
Before she walked through heaven’s door.

If I had known the pain would stay,
From choices made in youthful play,
I’d choose the right, I’d flee the wrong,
I’d walk with wisdom all along.

If I had known my dreams could fade,
I’d chase them hard, not be afraid.
I’d take the leap, I’d stand up tall,
I’d try again each time I fall.

If I had known that love could break,
I’d treat each heart like glass that shakes.
I’d not pretend, I’d not deceive,
But love with truth and never leave.

If I had known what silence meant,
I’d speak before the moment went.
I’d say "I’m sorry," "Please forgive,"
And teach my heart how best to live.
If I had known that life is short,
I wouldn’t waste it chasing thought.
I’d live with joy, I’d dance and sing,
And value every little thing.

But now I know, and I have grown,
From every loss that I have known.
Tomorrow waits with brand new light,
To help me live and choose what’s right.
