If
IF
If I welcome each new sunrise
Like the first that I have seen
As if the darkness had been scrubbed
And now is fresh and clean
If I embrace each new day
As if it were the first
And seek the things of beauty
In which I am immersed
If I study my surroundings
With the vision of a child
Reach my own conclusions
And let my thoughts run wild
If I greet my old friends
As if we had just met
And let them know I value them
That their loss I would regret
If I were to listen
As I never had before
To hear all that is offered
And let my mind explore
If I looked at my tomorrows
As if I’d only had a few
And considered each new coming day
As being born anew
If I were to do these things
As I watch my life unfold
Then how would I ever know
When I was growing old
