I Wish I Were
(Glosa)
~Cabeza~
I wish I were where Helen lies!
Night and day on me she cries;
O that I were where Helen lies,
On fair kirkconnell lee!
(From:'Fair Helen of Kirkconnell'anonymous)
In my soul there's no longer peace,
Since her voice of sudden had cease;
And a grief so cruel has sent me to sea,
I wish I were where Helen lies!
In dreams she calls me and later she pleads!
So lonely and cold she is, from whence now she lies,
O, Helen! My Maiden so fair! no more for her sky, stars nor sea,
Night and day on me she cries;
In the wind her laughter no longer teases,
No more riding are her songs, in the breeze!
Wish it was me, and not her sleeping under the tree,
O that I were where Helen lies!
Where my Love lies now facing the sea,
Where sparrows and seagulls, crosses swiftly the sky,
O, I wish it was me on that ground so cold, where now she lies,
On Fair Kirkconnell lee!
