I Wish

I wish that we had met
When we were very young
I wish it was you
Who was father to my son
Somethings can't be changed
This I know is true
It suddenly dawned on me
That I can never be with you
You need to do the things I've already done
You need to marry and maybe have a son
I just can't see myself trying to hold you back
I hate the ugly truth of it
But sadly it's a fact
And so I'll step aside
And hope you understand
I want the very best for you
You are a special man
One day I'll see you in the park
Playing with your son
And I'll know the choice I've made
Was the right one
I will always love you
And I hope that you'll remember me
As the girl who loved you enough
To set you free
