I Will Never Have a Grandchild
I will never have a grandchild Mrs. Lee lamented.
How old are your boys? I asked.
Forty-six and forty-eight.
You don’t know that, I said. There is hope.
They live at home with us, she told me.
I make their meals, I do their laundry. I clean their rooms.
I am shocked.
She has been a special ed teacher for forty years.
Teaching other people’s children basic life skills.
Do they have jobs? I ask.
No. They play video games all night.
or they meet their friends and play music.
I am speechless.
