I Tried To Please Them All

I tried to please them all — the kind, the cruel, the cold,
I bent my laughter into shape, my warmth to fit their mold.

I offered flowers from my heart, and they withered in their gaze,
They praised me when I vanished, and forgot me in their praise.

Their voices filled my quiet dreams, their judgments cut like glass,
And every smile I borrowed once, was something I let pass.

I danced until my feet were sore, on floors of shattered glass,
And lost the light that once was mine, to please another face.

Now silence is my gentlest friend, it does not ask or take —
It loves me when I am unmade, when morning will not wake.

I tried to please them all — but found, when all was through,
The only soul I had to please — was trembling, and was true.
