I Stand Tall and Bear Witness To All That I See

When I was born, the surrounding land was clear and green. Very few people were living in the area. It’s hard to fathom some of the things that I have seen. Mostly good, but a few days of complete hysteria. In the middle of the hot and humid, summer heat Men with guns began a very long, terrible fight. It was by chance that these two groups, here, would meet And battle each other for three long days and nights. I could do nothing but stand here and watch the blood spill And listen to the horrible cries of the young men. I watched it all while overlooking this very hill Wanting so much to turn away, time and time again. After all the pain that I’ve seen, I long for the past Hoping for a future in which all these men will see That the shade from my shadow that I will always cast Will forever be here whenever someone needs me.
