Notes About The Poem

Poem to my mother who died from Alheimer and now my brother who has dementia.

I Know You’re Scared Brother

I know you’re scared brother.
  Demons possess you.
In and out of this realm.
They keep you from what’s true.

Yet at times you wake
To loving eyes in your room.
A spell lifted from once shadows loom.

In some you see the laughs.
  In others, the cries
You relinquish the lows.
  Ride the highs.

The gather motions in close.
  A daughter touches hand.
Tears from eyes you remember, when she began.

This moment too will pass.
  This memory also fleeting .
Tik Tok along a clock.
  The person you are, depleting.

Collage of pictures sweeps your mind.
You fight hard to hang on.
Shadows still creeping, like moon to dawn.

Your brothers, your sisters
  All are gathered.
Fences that need mend
  No longer mattered.

Witnessed in life helps to perceive
To offer forgiveness and love
  Before one leaves.

Memories in you abandoned
  You’re starting to slip
Memories shared in abundance.
  It’s okay to lose grip.

Pass through my brother.
  We will offer prayers,
For rest, open gates and settled affairs.

You have been brought home.
  Mind and memory intact.
A picture painted.
  No longer in the abstract.

Here, we’ll hang on tight.
  Memories, we won’t let go.
All part of life, ebb and flow.
