I Can’t Come Home To You Tonight

I can’t come home to you tonight—
The Dusk has locked the Door—
And Winds—arranged in ragged Choir—
Debate along the Floor—

I heard your Lamp—across the Miles—
It flickered—calling—Me—
But Circumstance—an austere Host—
Insists on Company—

So keep your Silence—woven warm—
Around the absent Chair—
And know—though I cannot return—
My Ghost is always There—

For Distance is a minor Veil
When Souls—by Lantern—see—
I can’t come home to you tonight—
But Night—comes Home—to Me—
