I Cannot Work With Him

you have to collaborate
you are a team
a family
you must work together

I cannot work with him! a fourth-grader yelps.
Or her or him or them or you or anyone.
I will do this group project by myself.

That is not a group project, I tell him.
But he refuses.
Flat out.
Because he is smarter than anyone else.

Twenty-five years later I discover
that he has had many jobs
but has not kept any of them for more than a week.
