HUMAN RUIN
Why does the doorbell ring
When I am going to sleep;
And why does the bank clerk call
When I’m eating my lunchtime bread?
I’ve structured my life for calm,
To be honest and to be free
Yet many around seem so intent
on continually disturbing me.
They park their cars
And trap me in
And cut their lawns to let the grass
Straight through my house blown in
They answer many a simple
And polite request
With hate disdain anger and disgust
They can’t do anything honest or simple
Without noise and chaos and meaningless fuss.
They light their streets with so much light
You cannot see even a single star in the sky at night
They spend their days watching PC’s cell phones and TV’s
And read less than a single book each year it seems to me.
They can’t comprehend most things
Complex or in profundity
Most are meant to quickly be forgotten
Quickly in time by eternity
They dress like slobs
And eat like pigs
And speak without much grammar
and with common vulgarity.
But we just have to tolerate
Their ignorance and sin
And find a way to not let any of it in.
I need a way to feel safe
And removed from all of this
I need a constant hug from God and a kiss.
Enfolded in a sacred light
Safe and sound
Both day and night
