How He Came Into My Life

Maybe about a year ago
he started to smile at me
that way a man looks happy
in mind, soul and body.

He'd crack jokes with me
call me by the name Lisa
admitting he had no idea
who this Lisa was at all!

I didn't know what to think
keeping my distance a bit
though curious all the same
could he be interested?

I gave him a Christmas present
nothing expensive mind you
just a little something
to remind him of the Lord and me.

We'd met at church, after all,
so I thought a religious gift
was just the right kind of gift
to be shared between us.

He asked me for my number
even before he opened it,
I hadn't known what I'd say...
but I just had to give it to him.

He called me a few days later
asked me out to the movies
we went out to lunch beforehand
we had a wonderful time!

Then we got to talking, and
we had so much in common
it was funny, amazing really
our lives were like mirrors.

We spent hours on the phone
filling in all those years when
we'd not yet met; it was like
knowing one another forever.

We'd spend time together
enjoying the puppy growing up
like she was our daughter;
we called ourselves ma and pa.

One Friday I knocked on his door
but he didn't answer at all!
No one, nothing stirred inside;
he was already resting.

I called and called until I was told
he'd died in his sleep peacefully;
I'm glad he went painlessly;
I'd choose to go the same way.

I miss him so much, but
I know he's in a better place;
I look forward to spending eternity
playing with our puppy there....
