How Did It Ever Get This Far

I step out on the street like a deer in the headlights of a car.
As I wonder to myself how did it ever get this far?
I think I tried to jump but someone raised the bar.
I look up to the sky and see a shooting star.

I gaze around as I see the tail lights disappear.
I feel someone else grabbed the wheel to steer.
I can’t see anything perhaps it’s all too near?
I realize there’s nothing to fear except for fear.

I stand alone, I feel this sinking in my heart.
I thought I’d found a place where I could start.
I try to fix the puzzle but the pieces come apart.
It seems that the horse is behind the cart…

I look up at the moon and wish that I was there.
I think of all that happened , it feels quite unfair.
I wonder to myself, why do I even care?
The words that I say are greeted with blank stares.

I guess I need some sleep, I’m feeling rather tired.
Everything I thought was new, it seems it has expired.
I tried to find just what my heart desired,
I dream of the top but it keeps getting higher.

I try to tell myself it shall be okay.
Maybe someone will hear the words I say?
There are many options along with many ways,
I will learn to live and fight another day.
