Hopeless for you

I watch you, little brother,
Chasing clouds with a hollow smile,
Your fingers wrapped around the vape,
The smoke that fills your lungs,
Filling spaces that should be full of dreams.
I wish I could shield you,
From the chains you don’t yet see,
The slow grip of something that steals your breath,
Your innocence, your light.
But how do I fight something
That you can’t even see as a fight?
I speak to you, but my words are like whispers,
Drowned by the fog you breathe in,
The haze that wraps around your mind
Like it’s the only place you know.
How do I help you,
When you won’t see the danger
That’s creeping in,
In every puff, every hit,
Slowly consuming the you I knew?
I am your older brother,
But sometimes I feel so small,
So powerless,
Watching you slip further into something
That isn’t you.
I hate that I can’t take away the pain
That you’re trying to numb with the smoke,
Hate that I can’t reach you,
Even though I see you fading,
Even though I want to pull you back.
I’m hopeless,
Not because I don’t care,
But because I care too much,
And I can’t make you see
The way I see—
The way you’re losing yourself
For something that will never love you back.
But I will keep fighting,
Even if it’s just for your soul,
Even if I have to fight against your silence,
Even if I have to fight alone.
Because I can’t lose you, little brother.
I won’t let you disappear into the smoke.

Dear Neo, as long as you love, there is strength & hope. Just do what small things you can for your brother ~ only that makes the changes. “Be the Love you want to see in the World.” I think Mahatma Ghandi said this. ThkU for sharing your thoughts. I feel your commitment. Great Love, from your fellow South African, Ghairo.
