They picked the stones and threw them at her,
She tried to beg but nooo they had gone deaf,
So in pain she picked herself up and ran,
Ran on her feeble weak legs.
Their laughter followed her…chasing her …
But ‘twas the insults hurled at her with lighting speed
That brought her heart to its scraped knees.
She curdled her protruding belly,
Pain; sharp and wickedly severe,
The cramps… she tried to breath but she couldn’t,
Her weak hungry body collapsed,
And she lay there on that dusty road alone.
They called him the little man,
And they loved to put him down,
But he was strong inside out,
He had no muscles, but he could pack a mean punch,
So from a distance they jeered,
Furious that he should feel no fear.
He was not a lazy bum,
He awoke before the sun,
And retired long after the sun slept,
But his life was empty,
He wanted more, a famiy…even his mother was gone,
It was just him and his dog Tobby,
And though he practically fed them,
The villagers despised him.
He was just locking up when she stumbled against the gate,
“help us” she croaked and clutched her belly,
Her eyes glazed with pain were desperate,
And in his heart Muge knew she must be truly desperate,
To show up on his doorstep was to invite scorn.
He washed the blood and got to work,
She had cried her eyes out,
She had no strength to shout,
She gave one push and a little head popped out,
It seemed to stare out at him with a smile,
Muge blinked and helped it out,
The little boy came shouting and kicking,
He thanked his lucky stars and knew…
Mara awoke with a groan
She felt dizzy and uneasy,
The pain it hit her hard,
Her hands flew to her belly and she gave a wail,
“Dear God nooooo……”
But then he was there the small man with big eyes
Mara cringed in fear and tried to move away,
But he picked something bundled in clothes and laid it near her.
He did not speak he just sat and watched.
Cautiously she turned and there beside her ….
Lay a tiny pink baby who stared at her
As if trying to read into her soul.
Time passed and the boy grew ,
He loved to play and sing and laugh,
But he learned also to work and farm and school,
Muge sat on the veranda and watched him play
His wife was seated beside him,
Her feet propped on his thighs,
She rubbed her belly lovingly and smiled at this man
He gave her a smile that never ceased to make her heart flutter
The little boy came bounding up the stairs,
“When will you go buy our baby? I want a brother to play with”
Muge and Mara burst out laughing
And it held no trace of bitterness,
Each had found a home in the other.
