Notes About The Poem

Lyric poem on tarnished hillbilly love story. Poems can have layers of meaning: the obvious tense, lyrical, love story. Secondarily, a subtext posing an ethical question: is the narrator" an unreliable narrator"? An ethical question in contemporary creative writing today. Is the narrator a "truth teller"? "Right minded" or not? The opaque writing and implied details along with subtle references and nuance on gender, relationships, love, morals and money in the somewhat closed, remote, hillbilly culture raise questions. Hillbilly Honey

I got me a hillbilly sweetheart
Ah, she's a hillbilly honey
Bound by alluring smiles from the start
Love's more important than money

Her Pappy tried to rip us apart
Said she were a fast flamin' floozy
Our true love wouldn't let us to part
His lying never could confuse me

My beauty was a pure work of art
Forget what Pappy's coal mine produces
Never believed she was a tart
For me, only a true heart seduces

I got me a hillbilly sweetheart
Ah, she's a hillbilly honey
Bound by alluring smiles from the start
Love's more important than money
